Angela Windau - Educator of the Month

Angela "Angie" Windau received her Bachelor of Science degree with a math major from Ohio Dominican.  She has been a teacher for 29 years.  For the past 28 years she taught at DeSales High School.  Angie is the math department chairperson and teaches pre-calculus and high school math.

Angie has a heart for service.  She supports and works with Pets Without Parents, a no kill animal shelter, the Arthritis Foundation, The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, and the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure.  She has also helped with the Run with the Pack event and the Art for Arts Sake auction for the past several years.

Angie has 5 siblings and grew up in Carey, OH.

In the role of regional marketing director for The State Life Insurance Company (State Life), Michelle Prather works with independent advisors, attorneys, accountants, and clients to teach how to develop a plan for long-term care, focusing on long-term care benefits in the form of asset-based Care Solutions products.  Michelle provides sales training through group meetings, one-on-one producer discussion and public CE seminars. In addition, Michelle is also available to assist producers through client call support and workshops with client groups.  The Care Solutions were originally developed by Golden Rule Financial Services beginning in 1989, and continue through State Life after the GRFS sale to State Life in late 2005.  Beginning her career as a sales assistant in 1994 to a wealth manager, she received her license in 1995.  Michelle began working as a Care Solutions internal wholesaler in 1998, having spent her entire career in the financial services industry. She travels throughout Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania teaching about financial planning for LTC.  She’s currently pursuing her Chartered Life Underwriter certification.

September Membership Meeting

 

On September 18, NAIFA-Columbus kicked off their 2013-2014 membership year with a Membership Luncheon Meeting at J. Liu Restaurant in Worthington.  During this luncheon, September was recognized as Life Insurance Awareness Month and James Fuller with Snider, Fuller and Stroh discussed “Nine Steps to Building Your Insurance Practice and Your Community.”

President Duane Borcherding gave his President’s Message; Immediate Past President John Barber provided details on the MDRT Experience; and National Committee-person Cort Bradbury provided a report on IFAPAC.

A one-hour CE seminar was held prior to this luncheon from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.  Craig Berson, CEO/President of Berson-Sokol Agency, Inc., discussed “Policy Audit Review – Finding the Best Fit for Your Clients.”

House of Representatives Passes Agent Licensing Reform Legislation

Action Taken: Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1155, the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers Reform Act of 2013 (NARAB II). The bill, introduced by Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) and David Scott (D-GA), passed by a vote of 397-6. In previous congresses, the House has twice passed NARAB II, but the legislation has stalled in the Senate. This time the Senate has already taken steps to prepare for a vote on NARAB II.
NAIFA and its coalition partners have proactively championed the creation of NARAB for 14 years. If enacted, the legislation will establish a national – not federal – clearinghouse for agents and brokers seeking to sell insurance in non-resident states. A 13 member NARAB governing board, dominated by state insurance commissioners, will establish a single set of non-resident licensing and continuing education requirements for NARAB members. Membership will be voluntary and agents who apply will be required to submit to a federal criminal background check. NARAB will not receive any federal funding as it will be funded by membership fees that will be determined by the Board.

NAIFA and its coalition partners anticipate that the establishment of NARAB will lead to a reduction in duplicative paperwork and time spent with multi-state licensing. It will also prevent agents and brokers from losing customers who move to states where they are not licensed to do business, as well as grant them increased business opportunities in new state markets.
Next Steps: The Senate Banking Committee has referred the chamber’s companion NARAB II bill to the Senate floor. The bill, introduced by Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Mike Johanns (R-NE), has strong bipartisan support and Senate leadership has already agreed to bring it to the Senate floor for a vote. Given the limited legislative days in September, NAIFA is hopeful that the Senate will schedule that vote in the coming weeks –  paving the way for presidential action.
